Democracy Creative was originally started in January 2020 to bring people together to think creatively and find solutions to the problems facing democracy.

Over time, it evolved in two separate directions:

DEMOCRACY INNOVATION: One direction was democracy innovation and better forms of public engagement, with a focus on citizens’ assemblies.

LOCAL COMMUNITY EVENTS: The other was as a creative and organizing community, which grew out of our shared office in The Soda Plant in Burlington, VT.

For 4 years these two projects were under the Democracy Creative umbrella. But in late 2023, we began a process of separating the two project so they could each thrive as focused organizations with clear goals.

That led to the democracy innovation side of Democracy Creative spinning off into Assemble, while the local community work and democracy related projects remain under Democracy Creative.
